FATW5 CAL

This year the CAL - Crochet Along group is celebrating 5 years with another "Friends Around the World" CAL (FATW5). I was again asked to design a square for the CAL. I'm not allowed to say yet what the name of my square is or even when the release date is. However, if you are interested in doing this CAL (even just a few of the 43 squares from 31 designers), it began on the 16th of April 2020 at 10 am CDT (15th of April at 4 am here in New Zealand) with the release of the first square.

Unlike the last FATW CAL that I designed a square for (you can find my free Ponga tree square from that CAL here), this time around, I haven't been able to see a sneak peek of any of the other designs so it is all going to be a complete mystery to me as to what the designs look like. One thing I do know is that there are two other kiwi designers involved in this CAL, both of them I know through a crochet group that we all belong to.

The squares are all 12" (if using Aran/Worsted weight yarn and a 5 mm hook) so will be the same size as the squares from previous FATW CALs which makes it easy to mix and match the squares that you like from all three crochet along. You can find more details on the CAL Crochet Along blog on dates, approximate yarn quantities and a list of the designers (in alphabetical order rather than by square release date). I just saw some photos of the first square being posted and it is beautiful. The design is by the same person who kicked off the FATW3 CAL, Valerie Bracegirdle from Agrarian Artisan. Her design is called "Thistle" and it is beautiful. I enjoyed both of the squares she designed for the last FATW CAL and used them in my 3 small blankets and to create a bag for a friend of mine. I'm excited to see what the rest of the designs look like. I wasn't planning on making another blanket this time around but I am very tempted to do so if the squares are all as pretty as this first one.
