Kōwhai flower pattern

Introduction

Today I am releasing two new patterns. The first is a paid pattern (my kōwhai square which you can purchase here) and the second is a free pattern to make a small kōwhai flower. This little flower is a good way to use up small amounts of yarn (about 2 g of each colour) and is quick to work up.

It has been a while since I did a yarn scrap challenge so I thought it well overdue to add a new post on it. As I said in my other post, the kōwhai flower is a lovely little flower that blooms in Spring. I made several of these last year, for a project that Wooly Riot (the yarn bombing group that I'm part of). We yarn bombed a local park putting up temporary buntings with some other crocheted and knitted items (which included my kowhai flowers). It was strung up between several cherry trees before they started blooming to brighten things up near the end of winter. Notions

DK Yarn in yellow and green. I used 4 seasons Marvel 8 ply (green) and 4 seasons Marvel soft 8 ply (yellow) in the following quantities:

Yellow 2 g (4.6 m, 5 yds)

Green 2 g (5.7 m, 6.2 yds)

3.5 mm crochet hook

Yarn needle

Scissors

Size and gauge

Finished flower is: length 11 cm (4.3”), height 6.5 cm (2.6”), width 5 cm (2”)

Special stitches

Beg cluster stitch (Beg Cl) Begin with a slip knot of yarn on your hook. [Yarn over and insert your hook into st and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops] 2 times, Yarn over and pull through 3 loops on your hook.

Cluster stitch (Cl) [Yarn over and insert your hook into st and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops] 2 times, Yarn over and pull through 3 loops on your hook.

Front post double crochet two together (FPdc2tog) This stitch is worked around the legs of the cluster stitch exclusively in this pattern: [Yarn over and insert your hook from front to back around the first leg of the cluster stitch, yarn over and pull through 2 loops] repeat on the other leg of the cluster stitch then yarn over and pull through 3 loops on the hook.

Important instructions

Where a round begins with ‘FLO’ all the stitches in that row/round are worked in the back loop only or the front loop only, respectively unless otherwise stated. The next row/round all stitches are then worked in both loops again.

Ch 1 at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch.

Instructions

With green yarn begin with a magic ring

Rnd 1 Ch 1, sc 5 into the magic ring. Join to the first st with a sl st.	5 sc
Rnd 2 Sc in each st around. Join to the first st with a sl st.	5 sc
Rnd 3 Working in FLO, ch 1 {does not count as a st} (sc, ch 3, sc) in the first st, repeat in each st around. Join to the first st with a sl st. Fasten off green.	15 ch, 10 sc
Rnd 4 With a slip knot of yellow yarn on your hook, working in the unworked loops from Rnd 2, Beg Cl in the first st, Cl in every st around. Join to the first st with a sl st.	5 Cl
Rnd 5 Ch 1, FPdc2tog around the legs of the first Cl, repeat around the legs of each Cl st around. Join to the first st with a sl st.	5 FPdc2tog
Rnd 6 Ch 1 {does not count as a st}, [FPdc around the post of the first leg of the FPdc2tog, ch 2, FPdc around the post of the next leg of the FPdc2tog, ch 2] repeat around the legs of the each FPdc2tog around. Join to the first FPdc with a sl st. Fasten off and weave in the ends.	20 ch, 10 fpdc
