Crochet stitch challenge 1 - loop sc

Introduction

This is the first of the challenges I set myself. As you can see in the photo above, you can't really tell the difference between each loop stitch square if you look on the right side (loopy side) of the finished square. However, it is clear from the back which way I have worked each square. The good thing about starting off with the loop stitch is that you don't have to do the loop stitch in every single stitch in order to get something that looks like it is fully covered in loop stitch. This makes it easier to do the increases and decreases. Each of the above squares has a different number of loop stitches so the amount of yarn used for each is not exactly the same. I've included instructions below for what I did to make each of the squares. These have not been tested by anyone but me so hopefully, there aren't any obvious mistakes in the instructions. As you can also observe in the above photos I have not yet woven in the ends. I often leave this until I've finished a project because sometimes I realise I've made a mistake somewhere or decide to redo my project in a different way. With anything made with loop stitch, if I intend to cut the loops then I weave in my ends and poke them through in the middle of the loops and trim them to match the length to give myself a couple of extra loops.

Turning to the side of the rows, work 2 sc in the side of the row, work another 8 sc evenly along the sides of the rows and 2 sc in the bottom of the last row. Turn to the last side, (sc, loop sc) in the first sc, loop sc 8, (loop sc, sc) in the last st. Sl st to the first st to join. Fasten off and weave in the ends. (20 loop sc, 28 sc) (12 stitches per side)

Loop sc stitch in rounds

Notions

3.5 mm hook

DK yarn in main colour. I used 4 Seasons pure wool entwine 8 ply (colourway 55 - Emerald green): 7 g (11.8 m, 12.9 yds)

Ch(s) - Chain(s)

Sc - Single crochet

Loop sc - Loop single crochet

Rnd - Round

WS - Wrong side

** - Work instructions between asterisks the number of times indicated

Important notes

For this square, it is possible to work everything all in the same direction in continuous rounds (with or without a sl st at the end of each round). However, as mentioned earlier, you don't need to do a loop sc in each row/round to get good coverage of your loops. For this square, I've finished each round by doing a sl st to join then changed direction for the next round. Make sure you work the first st of your new round in the last stitch of the previous round and not in the sl st or your stitch counts might get out.
