Introduction

As with my previous stitch challenge (basketweave stitch), this was another tricky stitch pattern to work in the round and corner to corner. Like the basketweave stitch, this stitch is not a single stitch, but, rather, it is a series of stitches arranged to give a textured look. In this case, the stitches look a little like waves. This stitch challenge is actually harder to work with than the previous basketweave challenge because the pattern uses a mixture of 2 stitches that are different heights and it takes longer to see the pattern emerging.  You can see all my versions of this side by side in the photo above. I've already posted about how I made this stitch in rows so I'm just adding the photo below and you can find out what I did to make the square here.

I really love how this stitch comes out in rows and it can look very effective when made in a mixture of colours though I'm not sure I've figured out how often to change the colour to get the best effect. I worked my "squares" for this challenge in a couple of different ways. I've only typed up the way I did them the second time around where I changed colours either at the end of every round (when working in the round) or at the end of every row (when working corner to corner) but I have included photos of the original way that I made these square too.

Textured waves pattern in rounds

Initially, I had planned on adding 3 sc in each corner for this pattern in the round. The logic being that the height of a single crochet was between that of a slip stitch and a half double crochet. However, I also wanted to try to grow the pattern as quickly as I could since the last round would need to all be done in half double crochet (or the last round would not be a square shape). Therefore, I decided that I could do my corners all as (hdc, sc, sl st). This meant that I had to do most of my rounds in the same direction since after you sl st into the corner, the only way to add any more stitches is to ch 1 and I didn't want to add a ch 1 into the corner spaces. This means that my pattern doesn't work quite as I would have liked but I think the end result looks pretty cool even if it doesn't quite have the look of textured waves at this stage (I expect if I added in several more rounds I could achieve the look I was going for). The photos above show the end results from my first attempt using just a single colour (purple) and my second attempt using 2 colours (2 shades of blue). The instructions listed below are for my second attempt.

Instructions

Please note that for some rounds I changed direction before doing the next round so that I didn't have my first stitch in a corner as a slip stitch). If you are going to try this out then pay close attention to the instructions at the end of each round so that you know which direction you are facing for the next round. Where a round begins with BLO or FLO all stitches in that round are to be worked in the back loop or front loop only. If there is no instruction at the beginning of a round then all the stitches are worked into both loops.

Begin with a magic ring

Rnd 1      4 Sc into the magic ring. Sl st to the first st to join. (4)

Rnd 2      Ch 1, 3 sc in each st around. Sl st to the first st to join. (12)

Rnd 3      Ch 1, working in BLO hdc in the first st, *(hdc, sc, sl st), sl st, hdc* 3 times. (Hdc, sc, sl st), sl st. Join to the first st with a sl st.

Rnd 4      Ch 1, working in FLO, hdc in the first 2 sts, *(hdc, sc, sl st), sl st in the next 2 sts, hdc in the next 2 sts* 3 times. (Hdc, sc, sl st), sl st in the last 2 sts. Join to the first st with a sl st, ch 1 and turn. 

Rnd 5      Working in FLO, hdc in the first 3 sts, *(hdc, sc, sl st), sl st in the next 3 sts, hdc in the next 3 sts* 3 times. (Hdc, sc, sl st), sl st in the last 3 sts. Join to the first st, ch 1 and turn. 

Rnd 6      Hdc in the first 4 sts. *4 Hdc in the next st, hdc in the next 8 sts* 3 times. 4 Hdc in the next st, hdc in the last 4 sts. Join to the first st with a sl st. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Textured waves pattern corner to corner

This time round, I chose to use single crochets at each side since they are in between the heights of the slip stitch and half double crochets.

With your chosen colour, ch 2

Row 1        Sc in the 2nd ch from hook, ch 1 and turn. (1)

Row 2        2 Sc in the same st, ch 1 and turn. (2)

Work in BLO for every row after this until the final row

Row 3        2 sc in each st across, ch 1 and turn. (4)

Row 4        2 Sc in the first hdc st in the next st, sl st in the next st, 2 sc in the last st, ch 1 and turn. (6)

Row 5        2 Sc in the first st, sl st in the next 2 sts, hdc in the next 2 sts, 2 sc in the last st. Ch 1 and turn. (8)       

Row 6        2 Sc in the first st, sl st in the next 2 sts, hdc in the next 3 sts 2 sc in the last st. Ch 1 and turn. (10)

Row 7        2 Sc in the first st, hdc in the next 4 sts, sl st in the next 4 sts, 2 sc in the last st. Ch 1 and turn. (12)

Row 8        Sc2tog, hdc in the next 4 sts, sl st in the next 4 sts, sc2tog. Ch 1 and turn. (10)

Row 9       Sc2tog, sl st in the next 3 sts, hdc in the next 3 sts, sc2tog. Ch 1 and turn. (8)

Row 10        Sc2tog, sl st in the next 2 sts, hdc in the next 2 sts, sc2tog. Ch 1 and turn. (6)

Row 11        Sc2tog, hdc in the next st, sl st in the next st, sc2tog. Ch 1 and turn. (4)

Row 12        Sc2tog 2 times. Ch 1 and turn. (2)

Row 13        Sc2tog, ch 1 and turn. (1)

Row 14       Sc evenly around the swatch adding 12 sc per side. Fasten off and weave in the ends. (48 sc, 12 sc per side)
