Stitch challenge #9 - Camel stitch
I've quite enjoyed this week's stitch challenge. Unlike some of my previous challenges, this time I'm working with a single stitch rather than a stitch pattern. It is also one that can easily be increased or decreased. I also quite like how my little squares look, although, my square worked in rows and the one worked from corner to corner have curled a bit even with a border added in single crochet. However, I imagine they will be fine once they have been blocked.
You can see my little squares below. The first photo showing the right side of my work with the neat little rounds that look like they are knitted. The second photo shows the back of the squares. One thing I will say about this stitch is that it is very obvious which side is the right side of your work. I have a couple of ideas of what I can do with this stitch and I think I will attempt the easier of the two ideas for next week's post.
As always, some brief notes on what I did to make these 3 little squares is given below. I'm not 100% sure if there is an abbreviation that you can use for the camel stitch. I haven't found one yet so, because stitches are worked in the 3rd loop, I'm starting my rows/rounds of camel stitch by stating at the beginning of a row/round "Working in the 3rd loop" and adding in if RS or WS is facing (or at least adding it some of the time) because that is important to know for this stitch if you are working back and forth in rows. Any row/round that doesn't begin with "working in 3rd loop" will be worked in both loops.
Camel stitch in rows
With yarn in your chosen colour ch 11
Row 1 Hdc in the 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, ch 1 and turn.
Row 2 Working in the 3rd loop {WS facing} hdc in each st across, ch 1 and turn.
Row 3 Working in the 3rd loop {RS facing} hdc in each st across, ch 1 and turn.
Rows 4-7 Repeat rows 2 and 3
Row 8 Working in the 3rd loop {RS facing}, 2 sc in the first st, sc in the next 8 sts, 2 sc in the last st {from this point on work in both loops where applicable}. Turning to the side, sc 12 down the side, turn to the starting ch, 2 sc in the first st, sc in the next 8 sts, 2 sc in the last st. Turning to the final side, sc 12 up the last side, join to the first st with a sl st. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Camel stitch in rounds
For this square I worked with RS facing the whole way around.
With your chosen colour make a magic ring
Rnd 1 4 sc into the magic ring.
Rnd 2 3 hdc in each st around
Rnd 3 Working in the 3rd loop, hdc in the first st, *3 hdc in the next st, hdc in the next 2 sts* 3 times, 3 hdc in the next st, hdc in the last st. Join to the first st with a sl st.
Rnd 4 Ch 1, working in the 3rd loop, hdc in the first 2 sts, *3 hdc in the next st, *hdc st in the next 4 sts* 3 times, 3 hdc in the next st, hdc in the last 2 sts, join to the first st with a sl st.
Rnd 5 Ch 1, working in the 3rd loop, hdc in the first 3 sts, *3 hdc in the next st, hdc in the next 6 sts* 3 times, 3 hdc in the next st, hdc in the last 3 sts. Join to the first st with a sl st.
Rnd 6 Working in the 3rd loop, sc in the first 4 sts, *4 sc in the next st, sc in the next 8 sts* 3 times, 4 sc in the next st, sc in the last 4 sts. Join to the first st with a sl st. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
