Crochet basketweave stitch
Introduction
The basketweave stitch, as the name implies, gives a woven look to your crochet. Although I've used the word "stitch" in the name, it is actually a series of stitches worked together rather than a single type of stitch. To achieve this look you need to use front post and back post stitches arranged in groups. I initially thought that the groups were all meant to be 4 x 4, however, I've since observed other combinations. Adding a front post double crochet or back post double crochet (abbreviated fpdc and bpdc, respectively) at the beginning of a row can be a little awkward so most of the tutorials I've seen on this begin and end with a dc rather than a front or back post dc. I sometimes use a hdc rather than a dc at the beginning or end of a row as I feel like some of my front and back post stitches are a little shorter than a standard dc stitch.
Since there are so many ways to do basketweave pattern, I've included a few different photos of samples that I've done with some of these different variations of the basketweave stitch. For all of the selected variations, I have started with double crochet stitches and worked enough rows to give at least the minimum of the pattern. For all of the examples that I've made I'm planning on using them for my stitch challenge even though some of the "squares" did not turn out "square" due to the height of the front and back post double crochet stitches. However, despite not all my samples being square, I am sure that I can find a use for them with the other squares from my stitch challenge in my final use. Therefore, I added a border of single crochet around each example of basketweave stitch so they can be used later.
Variation 1: 4 x 4 basketweave
As I mentioned in the introduction, this is the most common version that I've seen. The above square shows the minimum number of stitches and rows to give a 4 x 4 pattern.
The basic pattern to give the above swatch was as follows:
NB: the turning ch 3 counts as the first dc in each row. The turning ch 1 in the last rnd does not count as a st.
Ch 13
Row 1 Dc in the 4th ch from hook (first 3 ch count as first dc), dc in every other ch across. (10 dc)
Rows 2-5 Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and in subsequent rows), fpdc around the posts of the next 4 sts, bBpdc around the post of the next 4 sts, dc in the last st. (2 Dc, 4 Fpdc, 4 Bpdc)
Rows 6-9 Ch 3, bpdc around the posts of the next 4 sts, fpdc around the posts of the next 4 sts, dc in the last st. (2 Dc, 4 Fpdc, 4 Bpdc)
Round 10 Ch 1, turn to the side, sc evenly around the sides, sl st to join. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
The result gave a rectangular shape as expected due to the height of the stitches.
Variation 2 - 4 x 2 basketweave stitch
This is similar to the 4 x 4 basketweave stitch except you need fewer rows before you repeat the pattern. I've made this with 1 1/2 repeats so that the final shape is approximately square.
As with the previous variation, the turning ch 3 counts as the first dc in each row. The turning ch 1 in the last rnd does not count as a st.

Variation 3: 2 x 4 basketweave
This variation is similar to the first in that there are 4 rows before you change to the other part of the pattern. However, this time you're working in sets of 2 front or back post stitches per row. Again, like the first variation, you end up with a rectangle rather than a square shape at the end.
As with the previous variations, the turning ch 3 counts as the first dc in each row. The turning ch 1 in the last rnd does not count as a st.

Variation 4 - 2 x 2 basketweave
The above photo shows a 2x2 basketweave pattern. As you would guess from the title, you work groups of 2 front post or back post stitches for 2 rows before you alternate. Again, I've made this swatch so that it is essentially square so that it fits the approximate size I want for my final stitch challenge project (though, as I said earlier, I will use all my little samples even if they aren't the right shape).

Varation 5 - 1 x 1 basketweave
As with the other variation, the name says it all with the repeating pattern. This version alternates between fpdc and bpdc and then in the next row alternates between bpdc and fpdc. As with the previous varation, I have worked enough rows to give an approximately square shape.
As with the previous variations, the turning ch 3 counts as the first dc in each row. The turning ch 1 in the last rnd does not count as a st.
